Nintendo said today that annual profits increased by 77% thanks to record sales of Wii and DS. Net income rose from 98.4 billion last year to 174.3 billion yen.
Nintendo's dominance of Sony's Playstation Portable has translated to Wii, with it outselling Sony's Playstation 3 two-to-one in Japan and U.S. Prior to the figures release, Yuuta Sakurai, an analyst at Nomura Research Institute Ltd. in Tokyo said, "In the handheld market, the DS is pretty much unassailable." He also said that Wii is leading Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Also revealed in the report was Wii sales figures. In the 5 months since release Wii has sold 5,840,000 units, just short of Nintendo's 6 million sales prediction (no doubt due to shortages).
