Nintendo acquires majority stake in Monolith, secures future of Wii RPGs

The GameCube was always starving for good third-party content, and there was also a lack of good RPGs for the system. Many people wonder if the Wii will suffer the same fate, but Nintendo seems determined to keep that from happening: they now own controlling shares of Monolith, the developer responsible for Baten Katos on the GameCube. They also developed the Xenosaga franchise on the PlayStation 2, meaning fans of that series may not get to see any more updates on Sony's hardware.

I was always a Xenogears fan myself, but I can imagine this new may make some RPG fans unhappy.

This purchase should help the Wii in the RPG department, and of course Nintendo will still get to profit the most from the hits on their systems by owning such a large share in the company. Just the way they like it. We'll keep an eye out and see if they announce any specific titles coming to the Wii or the DS in the near future.
