Do you take out ten movies a month from Netflix? Do you own a PlayStation 3? Then you're on the right track to future movie nirvana...just get rid of the Netflix subscription.
Sony has always said they want to increase the PS3's overall functionality and capabilities, and while some of those upgrades are a little ho-hum to most gamers (like "Life With PlayStation"), this one's a biggie: according to the Associated Press, Sony has officially revealed that in addition to "strengthening" the Network over the course of the next few months, they will also introduce a downloadable movie service in the US this summer. Both Europe and Japan will receive the same service at a later time, and Sony should announce those expansion details some time next month. Next to the Store, this will be the single biggest addition to the console to date, and is an immediate selling point for consumers.
We don't yet know the specifics of this service - i.e., how much it will cost, how many movies we can rent, how long it will take to download each, etc. - but we expect those to arrive within the next few weeks; probably at E3. We'll keep you updated on this, as it's certainly one of the most important announcements for Sony's next-gen console thus far.
I hope Sony could do a better service than what Microsoft has done, but I just feel if they could compete then that will be something worth looking for on the Sony Network.
Last week, SCEA revealed the list of titles that would be on display at E3 this year. Most all of the big-name games are there - Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, etc. - but one is missing: God of War III.
Granted, it's most certainly coming out later than the aforementioned "Big 3," but a recent European rumor says the third entry in the fantastic franchise will indeed make an appearance at E3 2008. The quote in question is a translated one, and although it's rough, it's making the Internet rounds at lightning speed:
"Sony Computer Entertainment disclosed, throughout the Interactive event and Digital Entertainment Festival that is to elapse in Paris, that God Of War III goes to be presented in the E3. The company did not want to give many details, but probably, no longer next month to July, we will go to know the first details and to see the first trailer of so waited game."
As far as we know, GoWIII won't arrive until the end of next year, which means it's far more sensible to assume we'll see it at E3 2009. However, perhaps SCEA has a little surprise up their sleeves this year; it may not be a huge unveiling or a series of big announcements, but we may indeed learn something new about the game. Here's hoping!
Depending on where your opinions reside in this post-Assassin's Creed world, the thought of a sequel may or may not be of interest. As such, the following news may or may not be annoying: Forbes has posted (via Kotaku) an interview with Lauren Detoc, Ubisoft's North American president, in which he said, in regards to the inevitable Assassin's Creed sequel, "When we bring it back, there will be more anticipation for it."
Detoc sounds aware of the mixed reception among critics and gamers alike. Hopefully this means Assassin's Creed 2 will fix whatever issues the original had so we can all enjoy it.
In regards to the absence of Prince of Persia games in recent years, Detoc noted, "As we get bigger, we can give it more breathing room." If more breathing room also means time to give the franchise more interesting turns, like the new, colorful incarnation, and less not-so-interesting turns, we're all for it.
Neil Young has decided to leave EA to take lead his own company. Young had been with EA for 11 years, and was responsible for working on several projects including The Sims 2 and Medal of Honor: Airborne.
Taking his place at EA/Blueprint will be Louis Castle. Castle just finished work on Boom Blox and will be working with Spielberg's next gaming endeavor, a project now under the handle LMNO. I'm personally most intrigued by that crazy title.
So apparently Metal Gear Solid 4 sold pretty well. Are you really surprised? It's currently sitting at the top of the UK charts after having knocked Lego Indiana Jones off the perch. As a result MGS4 is the fastest selling PS3 exclusive in the region and second fastest selling PS3 game (the 1st fastest being GTA IV). It's also worth noticing that the game has beat MGS3 with regards to first-week sales, but has fallen short by 14,000 when compared to MGS2's.
It is going to be very interesting to see the NPD numbers next month. I'm more curious to see how the PS3MGS Bundle does. Also if Metal Gear Solid is a system seller, which I feel it is.
