Guitar Hero 3

Yup, these are videos of Guitar Hero III. Yup, they look pretty much like Guitar Hero II (and Guitar Hero I for that matter). Of course, no one really cares do they? It's Guitar Hero! With that said, there are some small differences worth noting. First of all, the character models look like they've received some new-gen love and are more detailed. The HUD has some slight graphical tweaks as well, though none of them seem to affect gameplay. The star power meter has been replaced with a series of light bulbs. As you fill the meter, more of them light up. They slowly fade out once star power is activated. In addition to displaying your current multiplier, the left side of the HUD now keeps track of how many notes you've hit consecutively. Frankly, we'd like the ability to turn that feature off, as it could add undue stress to achieving those perfect runs. You'll find another video embedded after the break. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Pandemic talks Mercenaries 2: no vs. multiplayer

Eurogamer recently sat down with Scott Warner, Pandemic's lead designer for Mercenaries 2. We don't get a ton of new info on the game, but it's interesting nonetheless. One nugget that was revealed is that while most areas will respawn after they've been destroyed, there are certain areas that will remain in tatters after you've blown them to smithereens. The game will feature hundreds of new vehicles including boats, a first for the series. There's bad news for multiplayer fans though, as there are no plans for any competitive multiplayer. Mercenaries 2 will, however, feature online co-op. Hit the "read" link for the full interview.

There is no mention of Bono in the interview by the way, though we expect he was -- as always -- lurking in the shadows.

Xbox 360: VF5 a summer release

It seems there's some confusion surrounding the release date of Virtua Fighter 5 according to Eurogamer. It seems that several online retailers, including GameStop, Amazon, and Play.com, are listing the game as a fall or even winter release. SEGA begs to differ and has confirmed with Eurogamer that Virtua Fighter 5 is still planned as a summer release. Eurogamer also notes that we still don't know exactly what will be different between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the title, especially given recent revisions to the arcade game. Of course, we're all still hoping for online multiplayer, but we're not hoping too hard.

Silent Hill 5 going Multi-Platform?

Silent Hill 5 (working title) has yet to be shown or announced in any official capacity, but rabid fans have been hanging off of every bit of speculation since Silent Hill 4: The Room shipped in 2004. Masashi Tsuboyama, chief designer of the next Silent Hill project, added more fuel to the fire in a recent interview with Dengeki PlayStation, which comes to us in English via aptly-named fan-site, SilentHill5.net.

Though Tsuboyama is hesitant to confirm any specifics about the upcoming entry, he does speak at length about all three next-gen platforms over the course of the interview. "We have been assessing next-generation consoles such as Sony's Playstation 3," he said. "We have looked at other consoles too but they exact limitations which could delay progress. We have not decided the console yet."

When asked about the prospect of a multi-platform release, Tsuboyama noted that previous entries had been released across several platforms, but acknowledged that it was back when they "were working at DVD level with no HD needed." Though he praised the PlayStation 3 for its internal hard drive and use of the Blu-ray format ("a great asset to the developer in the future"), Tsuboyama said that "multi-platform will be discussed," but that nothing was certain at this point.

Tsuboyama claimed that the Xbox 360 "is definitely a candidate" despite weak sales in Japan, and though he congratulated Nintendo for its success with the Wii, he didn't think it was necessarily the best match for the Silent Hill franchise. "This by no means says we will not consider the idea," he added, "but the general opinion is that Wii is for family games, and I'm sure the fans don't play Silent Hill with their grandma!"

Best not to underestimate the hardcore, Wii-playing grandmothers. Tsuboyama slyly closed the interview with a non-denial denial about a potential E3 appearance for Konami's survival-horror series: "I'm not saying Silent Hill 5 will definitely be there, but you should be!" Mark the calendars for mid-July, folks.

Xbox 360:Hour of Victory demo is ready

We all knew it was coming and the Xbox gods didn't let us down, because a new Hour of Victory demo is available for download off the XBLM. And before you get your hopes up, word on the street is that this WWII shooter isn't all that memorable. Actually, we're hearing it's the opposite of memorable and more along the lines of forgettable. But we haven't got our mitts on it yet, so we can't be certain. So, we recommend that you give the Hour of Victory demo a download and base your opinion on your first hand experience. Or just wait a few hours until the masses weigh in with their critique.

If things could'nt get any worse. Sony gets Sued for Blu-Ray

A California company filed suit earlier this month claiming that Sony had infringed on a patent they held by using the technology they did with their Blu-ray DVDs. The California company goes by the name of “Target Technology Company” and they’re going after Sony for damages. The patent they claim Sony is stomping on is a patent they hold for how reflective layer materials are used in optical discs . The patent also covered the use of silver-based alloys that gave the same advantages of gold without having to use real gold. These alloys are allegedly more resistant to corrosion than just regular silver is, and help to give the discs a longer life

Walter Reed finds video games good therapy for wounded soldiers

Many gamers know that if they're in pain or feeling a little low, a dose of their favorite game can pick them up again. Games distract you from your problems, give you a sense of accomplishment, and can even take your mind off of physical injury. At the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a nonprofit group called Cause was looking for ways to help soldiers deal with their injuries after returning from the war. The best solution they've found? Video games. From the Washington Post:

Video games are all over Walter Reed. They're used for therapy or entertainment, or both. Alcibar doesn't have any hand injuries, but he's been trying to persuade some of his physical therapists to make Guitar Hero available to those who do. It would probably help some soldiers rebuild their hand strength and dexterity. And it's another excuse to play

Australia: 360 120GB HDD Goes On Sale Tomorrow

That’s right. While there’s a deafening silence from Microsoft Australia HQ on when we’ll be seeing the Elite 360, those tearing strips off the curtains while shrieking uncontrollably for more storage space for their 360 can…stop that disturbing practice. The 360’s 120GB HDD goes on sale in Australia tomorrow, and will set you back AUD$229. While the AUD$169 HDD will still, inexplicably remain on shelves as a reminder of this new addition’s “value”, I can think of a few other things to spend $229 on and still get enough change back to go buy my old lady something nice.

Strip PS3 Blu-ray Copy Protection

Kiss Blu-ray HDCP good-bye? A product known as the the GameSwitch PS3-S201 lets folks run their PLAYSTATION 3 on DVI monitors without high-def copy protection. Typically, an HDCP-certified monitor is required to play back Blu-ray and PS3 content if you’re using DVI. Otherwise it won’t play Blu-ray. The GameSwitch lets players game on DVI monitors, but also hook it up to an input. Meaning? Meaning that you could record 1-to-1 copy! The bad part: Since DVI is video only, audio would have to be recorded separately. Bummer.

Bungie: Don't Worry About Halo 3's Graphics

If there’s been one issue with the Halo 3 beta (apart from it killing my 360), it’s been the game’s graphics. While they’re still quite yummy (considering it’s a beta and you’re playing on large multiplayer maps), for some of you ravenous, insatiable graphics whores they just haven’t met your astronomical standards. But don’t worry. Your frantic knicker-twisting has not gone unnoticed. Frankie O’Connor:

“Multiplayer is by necessity a more sterile iteration of our graphical style and will always be tuned for performance and elegance rather than jamming the screen full of pixels. We think that the final aesthetic look of our game will be judged at launch in September and in part based on the more intense single player spaces. We’re also focused on maintaining the Halo character and atmosphere in our visual design - we’re competing with ourselves, and not simply trying to match the aesthetic of other games. We think that folks will be happy with Halo 3’s graphical polish come September

PSP hardware refresh coming this year, says report

So it looks like those endless rumors of a newly-spec’ed PlayStation Portable are finally about to come true, with an analyst from Lazard Capital Markets reporting that Sony has in fact copped to just such a device (most definitively NOT pictured above) at its Gamer’s Day gathering in San Diego. According to Lazard’s Colin Sebastian in a briefing regarding April game sales, “the company also indicated that [in addition to new software titles best left to another fine publication], a video download service and [PSP] hardware refresh are expected later this year.” While both tidbits sound like potentially big news, Sony was reluctant to give up any more info on either of these asides — meaning that you can still let your imagination run wild with magical features before the inevitable letdown. Still, if you’ve got your credit card in hand and sonystyle.com open in another tab as we speak, it might pay to hold off for a bit and see how this plays out.”

Half-Life 2 Ep. Almost Done

In the most recent Valve weekly update, the kids from Seattle promise they’re putting the “final parts of Episode Two together” and tease fans with a look at the forthcoming expansion’s concept art. You won’t see much in the way of game revelations, so consider it mostly spoiler free, but you will see some delicious art showing off Alyx, the Citadel and the G Man in exciting Episode 2 locations. With Valve personnel hitting the interview circuit recently to hype the Half-Life 2 Orange Box and Black Box releases coming this fall, it looks like they may actually meet this release date. In the meantime, Gordon Freeman appetites should be noticeably whetted with these three new, suitable-for-wallpaper art images.

Lost Odyssey 70% done!

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi talks up his forthcoming Xbox 360 RPG Lost Odyssey in a recent Famitsu interview. The game follows Kaim, who has been sentenced to live 1,000 years. Besides having “The Gooch” at the helm, Lost Odyssey is being scored by Blue Dragon composer Nobuo Uematsu Microsoft even established a subsidiary studio, Feel Plus, to help Sakaguchi create the title. So, what does The Gooch say? The game is 70 percent done, load times are being reduced and the game will have a fixed camera. Realism will be provided through “camera vibration and focus effects.” What’s more, magic attacks will be more powerful than physical attacks, proving that the wand is stronger than the fist. Gooch also adds that the game’s theme is “humanity.” This will be reflected in the score, which will differ from Mistwalker’s first RPG, Blue Dragon. That entire game clocked in at three DVDs. Any takers on how many DVDs Lost Odyssey will be crammed onto? Three? Four? Five? When I gather more information on this and get a answer to how many DVDs Lost Odyssey will have I will be sure to let you know.

Training British Soldiers On Flashpoint

The British Ministry of Defence has picked up an "enterprise licence" for the virtual combat training simulator Virtual Battlespace 2. Never heard of it? It's a bells-and-whistles version of Bohemia's oh-my-balls-it's-so-awesome Operation Flashpoint. Which means later this year Britain's best and bravest will be trained on what is, ostensibly, a modified version of a six year-old game. And I say good for them. I took away two things from playing the original. The first was that attack helicopters are great. The second was that, every time I was shot and killed instantly , from nowhere, I realised that real war must really suck, and that next time I should keep my head down. Hopefully this will also teach British troops that they, too, must keep their heads down. Oh, and also to avoid the fighters. They're rubbish.

DDR In 1500 Schools By 2010

According to the NY Times, DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) will be part of the curriculum in over 1500 schools by the end of this decade. It’s interesting that a society that was hell bent on keeping kids away from video games and out of arcades is turning to games for help now. Perhaps the school systems are finally realizing you aren’t going to keep the kids from playing games, so they might as well find ways to use them for positive things. I still have trouble understanding how kids could possibly be out of shape these days though. When I was a kid, exercise was part of society. We played outside during and after school. I’m not really sure if DDR is athe answer for fat kids, but it’s can’t hurt

If you upgrade into an Elite, your Arcade games have a surprise for you

It's always fun when you get to test out new hardware: trying to see what works and what doesn't, looking for differences—the whole thing can be exhausting once you get into the details. I moved my Live account from my old system to the Elite easily enough, and then I started to redownload all my Arcade games. This is kind of a process since I have over 20 games and the system only lets you queue up to six downloads at a time. I sat down and played some Geometry Wars, and then I remembered hearing about the problems people had with migrating their games. I rarely have my system away from my home network, so I reached back and unplugged the cable to see if I could play the games without the online authentication
