Passion For Games - September 2006

Square Enix tame Sony

Though Square Enix has long been a strong supporter of Sony's PlayStation consoles, the RPG developer may take a more egalitarian stance in the new hardware generation.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Square Enix senior vice president Michihiro Sasaki expressed a new attitude toward longtime partner Sony. "We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them," he said. "But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

Square Enix's most popular franchises, such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, have, for the most part, been PlayStation exclusives. One of Sony's advantages in the new generation -- one which may justify the PS3's high price for many gamers -- are the many hot franchises exclusive to the system.

So far, Square Enix is supporting each new console with two titles, including Final Fantasy-related games for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Oblivion Launches with PS3

Though given long-circulating rumors, it may not be shocking to our regular readers, Bethesda Softworks today announced that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the acclaimed RPG which has already wowed Xbox 360 and PC gamers, will arrive for the launch of PlayStation 3. Further, the company is adapting the game for portable play in the form of The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion for the PSP.

The Elder Scrolls IV arrived for PC and Xbox 360 in March, and quickly nabbed numerous high scores and Game of the Year nominations -- not to mention grabbing hours upon hours from players lost in its expansive landscape and open-ended story. Along with advanced A.I. and character customization, Oblivion features lush graphics, plentiful side-quests. The game's soundtrack has won awards and its voice cast includes Patrick Stewart, Sean Bean, Terrance Stamp, and Lynda Carter.

For now, Bethesda isn't detailing just how Oblivion on the PlayStation 3 will differ from its forebears, though there's little doubt Sony's new machine can handle the game's detailed visuals and epic scope. The company has said even less about the PSP title, except that it is slated to arrive in spring 2007.

As for the main attraction, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for PlayStation 3 is scheduled to arrive in North America on November 17 -- the same day the console itself reaches (and disappears from) retail shelves. The game will reach Europe in March, simultaneous with PS3's launch in that territory.

Well to me this is shocking new, being that I have always thought Oblivion was always going to be a Microsoft title that will only be release on the Xbox and PC Computer. Well I guess not! I just wonder how the heck that will work for a Sony PSP? On a playstation 3 I could understand but on a PSP I dont know! Well I guess we will find out in the next couple of months.

I will keep you all updated on this title, to see what changes Bethesda is going to make on the PS3 and PSP.

Doom on Marketplace

Among the many announcements made at X06 today in Spain was the revelation that the classic first-person shooter Doom will be available on Xbox Live arcade.

The game includes the four original single player episodes, four player co-op and Deathmatch. This is available online on Xbox Live or split-screen. Not much more was stated about the game except for a small fact sheet boasting that it will include achievements, matchmaking, leaderboards, 1080i support, 5.1 Surround and "smooth textures."

Doom is currently available on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft points or $10 (USD).

Banjo-Kazooie is back!!!!

Microsoft kicked off its European game event, X06, with a CG video of Rare's most beloved platform characters, Banjo-Kazooie, delighting the crowd with a one- to two-minute video of the colorful characters.

Aside from Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie represents Rare's most popular original characters (of which there are very few), and harken back to an older time in videogames when 3D platformers were on the rise, thanks to Nintendo's Super Mario 64

Microsoft just couldn't help itself at X06 this year, announcing three new Halo properties to the already massive juggernaut Halo 3 and trumping all its other titles.
